They also carry a lot of insurance. Owners and general contractors on these jobs often want high limits. They want a clean safety record. They want proof of coverage before you start work. It is often the biggest bill for an electrical contractor. It is based on payroll, and your crews do risky work.

General liability: pays when your work hurts someone else or damages their things. Owners may also ask for an umbrella policy on top.

Commercial auto: covers your trucks and crew vehicles.

Tools and equipment (inland marine): covers gear that moves from site to site, like testers and cable pullers.

Builder’s risk: covers the work while it is being built. The owner or GC often buys it, but check your contract.

Professional liability: may be needed if you do design or commissioning work.

Surety bonds: bid, performance and payment bonds. Federal building jobs over $150,000 need performance and payment bonds under the Miller Act.

What drives the cost

Image: Black Belt Safety

1. Payroll and job class

Workers’ comp cost is set as a rate for each $100 of payroll. Each type of job gets a class code, and each code has its own base rate. Field electrical work and office work are in different classes. Put each worker in the right class. Do not lump office staff in with field crews. This is one of the easiest ways to avoid paying too much.

2. Your experience mod (EMR)

Your experience mod compares your past claims to what was expected for a company like yours. More or worse claims push it up. Fewer and smaller claims bring it down. The mod is multiplied by your base rate, so a high mod means a higher bill. Many owners and GCs also look at your mod before they hire you. A high number can cost you the job before it costs you money.

3. The hazards of the work

Data center work is full of electrical risk. Think energized gear, arc flash, high-voltage work, substations, trenches and heavy cable pulls. An arc flash can happen even on low-voltage systems, and it can burn or kill. OSHA says gear that is off but not locked out should be treated as live. Train your crew with our electrical safety in construction course. Insurers want to see how you control these risks. Show them your electrical safety program, your lockout/tagout steps, your training records and your arc-rated PPE. NFPA 70E is the work practice standard that helps employers meet OSHA’s electrical rules.

See where these hazards show up in real inspections

Search OSHA inspection records by company. Your claims history

Your mod counts how many claims you had, not just how big they were. Lots of small injuries can point to a weak safety culture. Fix the cause, not just the claim.

5. Contract terms

Data center contracts often ask for extra terms. You may need to add the owner as an insured. You may need high limits. Each term can change what you pay. Read the insurance part of the contract before you bid, and price it in.

What you can control

Write down your safety program. Then make sure your supervisors use it. A plan that sits on a shelf does not stop injuries.

Train for the real hazards: electrical safety in construction, lockout/tagout, trenching and excavation, and fall protection.

Report injuries fast. Tell your insurer about every injury right away. Late reports can bring fines in some states.

Bring hurt workers back. A return-to-work plan is one of the best ways to keep claim costs down.

Keep payroll records clean. Make sure each worker sits in the right job class.

Check your mod every year. Know which claims are driving it.

Shop your coverage with someone who knows electrical work. Show them your safety controls, not just your payroll.

Related: How your EMR raises or lowers your workers’ comp premium.

Bottom line

For electrical and data center contractors, safety and insurance cost go hand in hand. OSHA notes that safer workplaces have fewer injuries and lower workers’ comp costs. A strong safety program, written down and used every day, helps you win bids and pay less.

Train your whole crew, keep the records

Every course in the vault for every worker.
