The leftover residue can burn too. OSHA’s spray finishing rule is 29 CFR 1910.107. Here is what it asks for.

What it covers

The rule covers spraying paints and coatings that can catch fire. It includes air guns, airless guns, and electrostatic sprayers. It also covers powder coating. It does not cover outdoor spraying of buildings or tanks. It also leaves out small portable sprayers that are not used again and again in the same spot.

The spray booth

Build it from steel, concrete, or masonry.

Keep the inside walls smooth so residue does not build up.

Leave at least 3 feet of clear space around it.

Dry booths need air moving at 100 feet per minute or more at the face. A gauge or alarm must show it.

Remove used filters right away to a safe place or a metal can of water.

Air flow

Fans must run while spraying. They keep running until the vapor is gone. Each booth needs its own duct to the outside. Do not send booth air back into the shop.

Training for 1910.107: Learn this rule step by step in our Spray Finishing with Flammable and Combustible Materials course. It is included in the Black Belt Safety Vault.

No sparks or flames

No open flames or spark-making tools within 20 feet of the spray area, unless a wall separates them. Wiring and lights in and near the area must be the right type for flammable vapors. All metal parts must be grounded.

Image: Black Belt Safety

Paint storage

Keep only what you need near the booth.
