This is the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. The 2026 event ran May 4 to 8. It was the 13th one.

OSHA calls falls the leading cause of death in construction. A stand-down is a simple way to fight that. Here is a plan you can run in 15 minutes.

What a stand-down is

A stand-down is a planned break in the work. The crew stops and talks about safety. OSHA’s focus is fall protection.

It is voluntary. No one has to sign up first.

Any size works. OSHA says a business with one worker can take part.

Any trade can join. It is not only for construction.

It can be short. OSHA says it can last 15 minutes or go on for several hours over a week.

The 15-minute plan

Minutes 0 to 3: Why we stopped. Tell the crew that falls are the leading cause of death in construction. Ask who has seen a close call.

Minutes 3 to 8: Walk one edge. Pick one real spot on your site. It could be a roof edge, a floor hole, a ladder or a scaffold. Ask the crew what protects them there. In construction, the rule starts at 6 feet above a lower level.

Image: Black Belt Safety

Minutes 8 to 12: Check the gear. Have each worker look over their own harness and lanyard. Personal fall arrest gear must be inspected before each use. Pull anything that is cut, frayed or has a bad buckle.

Minutes 12 to 15: Rescue and questions. Ask: if someone falls and the harness catches them, who gets them down, and how fast? The rule calls for prompt rescue. Write the answer down. Then take questions.

Want the crew trained, not just talked to? Our Fall Protection for Competent Persons course teaches the 6-foot rule, the systems and the inspections. It is part of The Dojo, our full course library.

Topics for a longer stand-down

OSHA suggests going deeper on roofing, ladders and scaffolds. Good ideas:

A toolbox talk on ladders or scaffolds

A gear inspection for the whole crew

Writing or updating your rescue plan

A hazard hunt for open holes and edges

After the stand-down

Get your certificate. OSHA offers a certificate of participation. You give feedback online to get one.

Share it. OSHA uses the tag #StandDown4Safety.

Fix what you found. Any missing guardrail or worn harness gets fixed now, not next week.

Make it count as training. A talk is a good start. A stand-down does not replace the training that the fall protection training rule asks for.

Do the training before May

A stand-down works best when the crew already knows the basics.

Start the fall protection course or train your whole team.

Sources

US Department of Labor highlights safe construction practices during 2026 National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls – Occupational Safety and Health Administration, news release May 4, 2026, checked 2026-10-16

National Safety Stand-Down: Frequently Asked Questions – Occupational Safety and Health Administration, checked 2026-10-16

29 CFR 1926 Subpart M (1926.500-1926.503) – eCFR, National Archives, checked 2026-10-16

Each May, OSHA asks every jobsite to stop work for a short time and talk about falls.
