For employees who work with ethylene oxide sterilizers, gas cylinders or EtO processes: hazards, the PEL, excursion limit and action level, monitoring, regulated areas and signs, controls, respirators (no half masks), protective clothing, emergencies, medical surveillance and training.
Need proof of training? The full course (25 min) adds practice questions, a job scenario, the final quiz and a certificate your employer can verify.
Take the courseThe standard applies to all occupational exposures to EtO, except products shown by objective data not to release EtO at or above the action level or above the excursion limit.
EtO hazards include cancer, reproductive effects, mutagenicity, central nervous system effects, skin sensitization, skin, eye and respiratory tract irritation, acute toxicity and flammability.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| 8-hour TWA PEL | 1 ppm |
| Excursion limit | 5 ppm averaged over 15 minutes |
| Action level | 0.5 ppm as an 8-hour TWA |

An emergency is an occurrence such as equipment failure, container rupture or control failure likely to cause an unexpected significant release of EtO.

Medical surveillance covers employees who are or may be exposed at or above the action level for at least 30 days a year (regardless of respirator use), and is made available to anyone exposed in an emergency. Exams are given before assignment, at least annually, at termination or reassignment, and as soon as possible when an employee reports symptoms of overexposure or wants advice about effects on their ability to have a healthy child. Exams are free, without loss of pay, at a reasonable time and place.
Training is provided at initial assignment and at least annually to employees potentially exposed at or above the action level or above the excursion limit. It covers how to detect EtO (such as monitoring and continuous monitors), its physical and health hazards, protective measures and procedures, and the hazard communication program.

Take the courseFact-checked against the regulation text on October 09, 2026. This certificate records completion of awareness training based on OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1047. It is not an OSHA card or license, and it does not by itself meet the training requirements of 29 CFR 1910.1047(j)(3). Your employer must still provide employees who are potentially exposed to EtO at or above the action level or above the excursion limit with information and training on EtO at the time of initial assignment and at least annually thereafter, including the operations in their work area where EtO is present, the location and availability of the written EtO final rule, the medical surveillance program, and the specific procedures the employer has implemented to protect employees from exposure to EtO, such as work practices, emergency procedures, and personal protective equipment to be used.
This guide explains the rule in plain words. Always read the regulation itself and your employer's site-specific procedures.
