What OSHA Says
OSHA defines a competent person in 29 CFR 1926.32(f):
“One who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.”— OSHA, 29 CFR 1926.32(f)
In plain words: you see the danger, and you have the power to stop it.
Why Being the Competent Person Pays Off
When you are trained to be the competent person, you become someone every crew needs.
Every Site Needs One
OSHA rules for trenches, scaffolds and fall protection need a competent person on the job. Someone has to fill that spot. It can be you.
You Become the Go-To Person
The boss trusts you to check the site and stop unsafe work. That trust makes you hard to replace.
Move Up in Your Career
Knowing how to find hazards is the first step to lead, foreman and safety jobs.
You Send Your Crew Home Safe
OSHA says one cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car. Knowing the signs before a trench caves in saves lives.
