1910.147(d): The six steps of applying lockout/tagout

By Black Belt Safety Editorial Team Official text as of octubre 15, 2026 Data updated octubre 20, 2026 5 min read

In plain words:

Lockout or tagout procedures must follow this sequence: prepare by knowing the type and amount of energy and how to control it; shut down the machine in an orderly way; isolate it from all energy sources; apply lockout or tagout devices to each energy isolating device; relieve or restrain all stored or residual energy; and verify isolation before starting work. Locks must hold isolating devices in the safe or off position, and tags must clearly warn that moving them is prohibited.
