Employers must not let workers work in excavations with accumulated or accumulating water unless adequate precautions protect them, such as special support or shield systems, water removal or a safety harness and lifeline. A competent person must monitor any water removal equipment, surface water must be diverted when drainage is interrupted, and excavations subject to heavy rain runoff need a competent person inspection.
