1910.147(f)(3): Group Lockout or Tagout

By Black Belt Safety Editorial Team Official text as of October 15, 2026 Data updated October 20, 2026 4 min read

In plain words:

When a crew, craft, department or other group does servicing or maintenance, it must use a procedure that protects each employee as well as a personal lockout or tagout device would. One authorized employee holds primary responsibility for the group, checks each member's exposure status, coordinates when more than one group is involved, and each authorized employee puts a personal lock or tag on the group device when starting and removes it when done.
